Jira Keyboard Shortcuts

A handful of bare-letter shortcuts (C, O, J, K) work anywhere with no modifier. Everything else runs through the command palette, Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K elsewhere, where you search for a command by name instead of memorizing a chord. HKeys covers Jira on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Windows and Linux Ctrl is the modifier throughout: Ctrl+K for the command palette, Ctrl+B/I/U for text formatting.

Mac Cmd replaces Ctrl for the same shortcuts: Cmd+K for the command palette, Cmd+B/I/U for text formatting.

What Jira shortcuts cover

Global shortcuts. Press C to create a work item, or open the command palette (Cmd+K / Ctrl+K) to run any named command without leaving the keyboard.

Work item navigation and actions. With a work item selected: O opens it, A assigns it to someone, I assigns it to you, M adds a comment. J and K move down and up between rows, N and P move between columns.

List view editing. Tab and the arrow keys move between cells, Home/End jump to the start or end of a row, and Enter confirms an edited value.

Text editor formatting. Inside a description or comment field, Cmd/Ctrl+B, +I, and +U apply bold, italic, and underline, and typing "/" opens quick insert.

Printable PDF

A printable PDF of Jira shortcuts is available for each platform. The command palette shortcut and the work item action letters are the ones worth learning first.

FAQ

What's the fastest way to work in Jira without a mouse?

Open the command palette with Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows and Linux), then type the name of what you want to do, such as "Change status" or "Add label". Jira searches commands, work items, spaces, boards, and filters from the same box.

Are Jira's keyboard shortcuts the same on Windows, Mac, and Linux?

Mostly. The only difference is the modifier key: Windows and Linux use Ctrl where Mac uses Cmd. The letter-only shortcuts (C, O, J, K, and so on) are identical on every platform.

How do I create a new work item without touching the mouse?

Press C from anywhere in Jira, as long as your cursor isn't in a text field. It opens the create work item dialog directly, without going through the command palette.
