GarageBand Keyboard Shortcuts

GarageBand is Apple's free music app, built around tracks, loops, and software instruments. On Mac it uses Logic Pro's Command-based shortcuts for track management and transport. On iPhone and iPad, an external keyboard brings the same shortcuts to Tracks view. HKeys covers GarageBand on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

What GarageBand shortcuts cover

Track management. Creating audio, software instrument, and duplicate tracks; renaming, muting, and soloing them by keyboard.

Transport control. Starting and stopping playback and recording, moving the playhead by bar, and jumping to locators, all without touching the mouse.

Region editing. Selecting, splitting, joining, and looping regions, plus cut, copy, and paste, the same editing vocabulary across every GarageBand platform.

Editors (Mac only). The Piano Roll, Score, and Audio editors each have their own transpose, quantize, and preview shortcuts once a region is open.

Live Loops (iPhone and iPad). Navigating and triggering cells in the Live Loops grid alongside the standard track and transport shortcuts.

Printable PDF

A printable PDF of GarageBand shortcuts is available for each platform. The track and transport sections are the most useful for everyday recording and arranging work.

FAQ

Do GarageBand keyboard shortcuts work on iPhone and iPad without an external keyboard?

No. Apple's own shortcut guide is explicit: shortcuts in Tracks view require an external keyboard connected over Bluetooth or USB. Without one, GarageBand on iPhone and iPad is touch-only.

Are GarageBand shortcuts the same as Logic Pro's?

Many of the core ones are, undo, copy, paste, and basic transport keys follow the same macOS conventions Logic Pro uses. GarageBand's set is smaller and simpler overall, reflecting its focus on quick, approachable music creation rather than professional production.

Does GarageBand on iPad have any shortcuts that iPhone doesn't?

Yes, one: Show/Hide coaching tips (H) is iPad-only. Every other keyboard shortcut Apple documents for iPad also appears on iPhone.
