Intro

Final Cut Pro on Mac is built around the magnetic timeline. Storyline edits (Insert, Append, Connect) use single letters like E, W, and Q, while Command and Option chords handle effects, color, and multicam angle switching.

Mac-specific shortcut notes

Building the timeline. E appends a clip to the storyline, W inserts it at the playhead, D overwrites, and Q connects a clip to the primary storyline. These single-key edits are the fastest way to build a rough cut without leaving the keyboard.

Multicam. The number keys 1 through 9 cut and switch a multicam clip to a viewer angle, and Option-1 through Option-9 switch the angle without cutting. Control-Shift-Left Arrow and Control-Shift-Right Arrow step through angles in the current bank.

Color and effects. Command-6 opens the Color inspector, and Control-Command-C, Control-Command-E, and Control-Command-S jump between the Color Board's Color, Exposure, and Saturation panes. Option-Command-C copies effects, Option-Command-V pastes them.

Playback speed. L and J play forward and reverse, and repeated presses increase the speed. Option-L and Option-J play at half speed in each direction.

The Final Cut Pro shortcut list for Mac is available as a printable PDF. The storyline-editing and multicam-angle shortcuts are the ones worth keeping nearby.
