Intro

OneNote for the web is available through Microsoft 365 or a free Microsoft account at onenote.com. It runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on any operating system. The modifier key follows your OS, Command on Mac, Ctrl on Windows.

The web version covers core note-taking, creating and editing pages, formatting text, and navigating notebooks. Some features present in the desktop versions, including the full tag shortcut set and quick note capture, are not available in the browser.

Web-specific shortcut notes

OS-dependent modifier. Command on Mac, Ctrl on Windows, the same convention as other Microsoft 365 web apps.

Core note-taking shortcuts. Creating new pages, basic text formatting, and navigating between pages and sections within a notebook all work in the web version. These are the most consistent shortcuts across all OneNote platforms.

Tag limitations. The full tag shortcut system (Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+9 on Windows) is not fully replicated in the web version. Basic tag application may be available, but the complete tag shortcut set is a Windows desktop feature. The table above covers what is supported in the web version.

Feature scope. Quick note capture (opening a new note from anywhere on the desktop) is a Windows desktop feature and is not available in the browser. The web version is primarily for editing existing notebooks and creating new pages, not for system-level capture shortcuts.

Browser shortcut conflicts. As with other browser-based apps, some key combinations are captured by the browser rather than OneNote. Common examples include Ctrl+W / Cmd+W (closes the browser tab) and Ctrl+T / Cmd+T (opens a new tab). The table above notes where conflicts apply.

Printable PDF

The OneNote web shortcut list is available as a printable PDF. The web shortcut set is smaller than the desktop references, the PDF covers the core operations available in the browser.
