Intro

OneNote on Mac uses Command (⌘) as its primary modifier. The Mac version is the modern cross-platform OneNote, the same app available through the Mac App Store and Microsoft 365. It covers the full note-taking workflow: creating pages and sections, navigating the notebook hierarchy, formatting content, and applying tags.

A few features present in the Windows version, particularly the older desktop-specific features and some tag shortcuts, are not in the Mac version. The shortcut set here covers what the Mac app actually supports.

Mac-specific shortcut notes

Command as primary modifier. All OneNote shortcuts on Mac use Command in place of Ctrl. Navigation, formatting, and page management all follow this pattern.

Page and section creation. Creating a new page under the current section, creating a new section, and navigating between recent pages all have Command-based shortcuts. These are the most-used shortcuts for people who capture notes frequently.

Notebook navigation. Switching between sections and pages with the keyboard, without clicking the sidebar, keeps the note-taking flow intact. The table above covers the navigation shortcuts for moving through the notebook hierarchy.

Text formatting. Standard formatting (bold, italic, underline) and heading styles work in OneNote for Mac using Command combinations, consistent with other Mac applications.

Tags on Mac. The tag system is available in OneNote for Mac. Applying common tags (To-Do, Important, etc.) has keyboard shortcuts. The full tag shortcut set is covered in the table above.
